Stone Therapy

Cultures and civilisations all over the world have used a combination of touch, heat and stones as therapeutic massage tools. Over 10,000 years ago the ancestors of Native American tribes began offering stones to the body for wellness. Stone Medicine is an American Indian Healing Art which incorporates both massage techniques and the natural healing energies of warm and cool stones. Geothermal Therapy is a modern term used to describe heated and chilled stone massage. This tradition continues today, as people become more aware of the benefits of this special and unique healing therapy and are incorporating the use of hot and cold stones.

We use hot basalt stones, created out of magma which is the thick liquid matter that is spewed out of erupting volcanoes in the form of lava. As the hot lava cools, it hardens into basalt. The stones that we use for treatments have been harvested from river beds of Arizona and Mexico where they have been eroded and polished by the flowing water for thousands of years to become naturally smooth and rounded. Basalt stones are dense and, due to their volcanic origin, are able to retain their heat for a long time, releasing it slowly. This makes them ideal for use in massage. They also have energy and healing properties, including stability, strength and clarity in difficult times.

We use cold Marble stones. Marble is also well known for its healing properties and has long been used for protection; which is one of the reasons many altars are made of marble. Marble is also said to aid in personal success and body fitness, assist in recalling dreams, help to promote meditation and support common sense and matters of the heart in relationships. These healing properties, along with its ability to retain cool temperatures, make it ideal to use for the application of chilled stones.

The use of both hot and cold stones causes a contrast bathing effect which can be very effective, as it causes a flushing and cleansing effect.

I received a Stone Therapy Massage today and have to say what an excellent treatment it was!  The treatment was undertaken with such a professional and calming atmosphere which really helped me relax. Joanne ensured that I was comfortable throughout the treatment and that the temperature of the stones was not too hot or too cold. This was such an excellent treatment that I will be having it done on a regular basis. I feel so relaxed now after the treatment  and highly recommend this treatment and any treatment which Joanne offers. Thanks so much for bringing calm to my hectic life.
